Obtaining permanent residency in Japan allows you to live in the country long-term with greater stability. However, failing to follow certain rules may result in the revocation of your PR status. This article clearly and concisely explains the situations in which your permanent residency may be revoked, especially for foreign residents living in Japan.
1. Failure to Complete Re-entry Procedures
Even with PR status, you must obtain a "Re-entry Permit" or "Deemed Re-entry Permit" before leaving Japan. If you leave without completing these procedures, your PR status may be revoked.
✅ Re-entry Permit (Multiple or Single)
Apply at the Immigration Bureau before departure
Two types: single-use and multiple-use within the validity period
Maximum validity: 5 years (6 years for special permanent residents)
✅ Deemed Re-entry Permit
パIf you have a valid passport and residence card, you can complete the procedure at the airport without visiting the Immigration Bureau
Valid for re-entry within 1 year of departure
‼Note: Exceeding the validity period may result in automatic loss of PR status
Tip: Confirm which permit you need before departure and ensure you return to Japan within the permitted timeframe
2.Non-payment of Taxes or Social Insurance
As per the amendment to the Immigration Control Act on June 21, 2024, failure to pay taxes or social insurance premiums may lead to the revocation of your PR status.
Recommended Actions
Settle any outstanding payments promptly
If facing financial difficulties, consult with your local ward office or tax office to arrange a payment plan
3.Submitting False Information in Your Application
If it's discovered that you submitted false information during your PR application, your status may be revoked. Additionally, if your circumstances change after application (e.g., divorce, job resignation), promptly notify the Immigration Bureau.
4.Failure to Report Change of Address
As a PR holder, you must carry your residence card at all times. If you move and fail to report your new address within 90 days, your PR status may be revoked.
✅ Changing your address is a simple process at your local ward office. Don't forget to do it!
5.Committing Serious Crimes
If you commit serious offenses such as drug use, prostitution, or assault, and are sentenced to imprisonment, you may be subject to deportation under Article 24 of the Immigration Control Act, resulting in the loss of your PR status.
